TTS: I would like to welcome K.A. Tucker BACK to the blog! We’re always happy to have her as we have for every book tour for the Causal Enchantment series.
K.A. Tucker: Thanks for having me, Misty! I always love visiting The Top Shelf 🙂
TTS: Let’s go back a book before we start talking about Allegiance. You have a bit to answer for!
K.A. Tucker: o.O…
TTS: My poor Nook had remained spill free until I read Asylum. You made me spit tea all over my e-reader with the appearance of the wolves. What do you have to say for yourself?
K.A. Tucker: I’m still chuckling over that almost a year later. I remember getting that curse-filled tweet from you. I thought I was going to have to buy you a new e-reader 🙂
TTS: Honestly as long as it works (and it does) I’m not too worried about it. You’re the first author to ever make me do that. I’ve learned by your example never to drink and read. Far too dangerous.TTS: Honestly as long as it works (and it does) I’m not too worried about it. You’re the first author to ever make me do that. I’ve never spit liquid when reading although I have dropped a book in the sink once. That’s what I get for reading and trying to do dishes. I just wanted to tease you about it a bit.
K.A. Tucker: I’ve learned by your example never to drink and read. Far too dangerous.
TTS: So here we are with Allegiance, book 3 in the Causal Enchantment Series and I think I heard you say on twitter or somewhere that this is the last book? Are we really not going to see anything more from Sophie, Evangeline or the gang?
K.A. Tucker: No! This is not the last book. There is one more. I thought this was going to be a trilogy but I discovered half-way through Asylum that this story in three books is impossible. As it is, Allegiance weighs in at 110 000 words and it’s fast-paced. The fourth book, which I haven’t started writing yet, will be the epic conclusion that the series requires (and don’t ask me what that epic conclusion is because I have no sweet clue!)
TTS: What was the hardest part about writing Allegiance or even the series in general?
K.A. Tucker: Keeping track of all the twists and turns and plot strings. This series is loaded with them. It’s as much about the characters knowing what’s happening as it is about the plot.
TTS: Who was your favorite character and why?
K.A. Tucker: That is a tough question. I always enjoy creating a new character. In Asylum, I fell in move with Mage. In Allegiance, I think Lilly is one of my favorites. That being said, I love how Evangeline has evolved. And then there are the Fates. They are just plain twisted. How can I not love them? See… can’t really pick one.
TTS: When I was doing the beta read for Allegiance, I actually emailed you after reading a large portion of the first half and I believe I said to you “Oh my God.. Could things possibly get worse?” Was that what you meant to do with how the story built up? To give the reader a sense of wow…this is such a mess? I could imagine you sitting at your computer going “Okay… this has happened but now I’m going to do this! Mwahahaha!”
K.A. Tucker: That is EXACTLY what went through my head while writing J and I’m not really kidding. When I write, I always try to stretch an idea as far as I can before the ‘elastic breaks’ so to speak. I push the conflict above and beyond.
TTS: Now you’re working on another book called Ten Tiny Breaths and I believe you said it was off to the betas now. Can you give us a little info on that? I haven’t even seen a synopsis for it since I’ve been lost in the book cave somewhere.
K.A. Tucker: Yes! And I’m excited about this one. It’s a completely new book in a new genre (Contemporary – Mature YA/New Adult) and it’s about a young woman involved in a tragic accident that claimed the lives of several people in her life. She tries to move on by burying rather than dealing with the tragedy. There’s love, there’s heartache, there’s friendship. You know, all the things that make this genre so much fun. Here’s the synopsis:
Kacey Cleary’s whole life imploded four years ago in a drunk-driving accident. Now she’s working hard to bury the pieces left behind—all but one. Her little sister, Livie. Kacey can swallow the constant disapproval from her born-again aunt Darla over her self-destructive lifestyle; she can stop herself from going kick-boxer crazy on Uncle Raymond when he loses the girls’ college funds at a blackjack table. She just needs to keep it together until Livie is no longer a minor, and then they can get the hell out of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
But when Uncle Raymond slides into bed next to Livie one night, Kacey decides it’s time to run. Armed with two bus tickets and dreams of living near the coast, Kacey and Livie start their new lives in a Miami apartment complex, complete with a grumpy landlord, a pervert upstairs, and a neighbor with a stage name perfectly matched to her chosen “profession.” But Kacey’s not worried. She can handle all of them. What she can’t handle is Trent Emerson in apartment 1D.
Kacey doesn’t want to feel. She doesn’t. It’s safer that way. For everyone. But sexy Trent finds a way into her numb heart, reigniting her ability to love again. She starts to believe that maybe she can leave the past where it belongs and start over. Maybe she’s not beyond repair.
But Kacey isn’t the only one who’s broken. Seemingly perfect Trent has an unforgivable past of his own; one that, when discovered, will shatter Kacey’s newly constructed life and send her back into suffocating darkness.
TTS: What are you doing while you wait for their feedback are you working on something else?
K.A. Tucker: Taking a brain break 🙂 It’s been go!go!go! for months now. I’m limited with my writing time due to a demanding full-time career and family so I’m taking the time to squeeze in a few books and relax before the whirlwind begins again. FYI The beta feedback is back… and it’s fantastic 🙂
TTS: What are your plans after Ten Tiny Breaths is published?
K.A. Tucker: I’ll likely start the last book in the Causal Enchantment series. The books in this series have taken much longer to write than TTB due to the level of detail. I hope to have it out by Summer 2013. I’m also thinking of writing a follow up book to TTB but based on Kacey’s sister’s life. We will see.
TTS: I must once again thank Kathleen for being here! Everyone go out and grab the entire Causal Enchantment Series. It’s great Halloween reading and since Halloween was yesterday, you should still be in the spirit! The first book Anathema is free for your e-readers at both Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
K.A. Tucker: Thank you for having me! Always a blast, Misty! Even with your creepy Facebook eye… ever-watching…
Born in small-town Ontario, Kathleen published her first book at the age of six with the help of her elementary school librarian and a box of crayons. She is a voracious reader and the farthest thing from a genre-snob, loving everything from High Fantasy to Chick Lit. Kathleen currently resides in a quaint small town outside of Toronto with her husband, two beautiful girls, and an exhausting brood of four-legged creatures.
