Guest Blog: Scott Nicholson

Until I got my e-reader, Stephen King was my favorite thriller/horror writer.  Now, I have a new favorite and that would be the man that’s taking over my blog today.   When I pick up my nook and load a Scott Nicholson e-book, I know I’m in for a creepy, spooky and sometimes just downright twisted story.  He always leaves me wanting to read more of his work.  Today, he’s talking about ghost stories!  Enjoy!

Ashes: Ghost Stories

By Scott Nicholson

I was exposed to ghost stories from my grandma in the Southern Appalachian Mountains, and later on I became interested in haunted places.

As a newspaper reporter, I would be sent out every Halloween to do a local ghost story, and I started using them in my stories and novels. Usually I changed the story to make it less of an urban legend, and I learned a lot by ghost hunting as well. That hobby started by covering a ghost hunt for the newspaper, and I became fascinated as much by the culture of paranormal investigation as I did the possibility of ghosts.

Because ghosts tap into the very core of what it means to be alive, it’s my favorite fictional subject. What I love about ghost stories is that they can be spooky, funny, weird, or mysterious. They can be mystical and touch on deep issues of faith, or they can be pure entertainment. And, since there’s never been proof of the existence of ghosts, it’s easy to change the rules with every story.

In many ways, I feel like I am telling modern folk tales, stories we could tell around the campfire. Gather round and warm your bones while you chill your soul with some tall tales.
