Burlesques, Cabarets and Spectaculars

Hey peeps,

Cassandra Dean here, with the inside track on ROUGH DIAMOND. Hmm. Yeah. I kinda have an inside track cos, um, I wrote it. So not really earth-shattering that I know stuff about it…

Anyhoo! I thought I’d chat a bit about Burlesques and Cabarets, and the Diamond Theater’s Spectacular. When I was developing ROUGH DIAMOND, I knew I wanted the heroine, Alice, to have a particular interest. As she was the owner of a saloon, it needed to be something to do with the saloon. So I thought, how cool would it be if Alice created a Burlesque Spectacular Cabaret thing??

I have an insane passion for cabarets and such. I LOVED Cabaret, and was lucky enough to see it when it came to Adelaide. When I visited Paris (yeah, I’m totally a world-traveller *tosses hair*), I attended a Parisian nightclub and watched a burlesque cabaret show. It was, to put it mildly, rather fabulous.

So when I had a chance to explore my interest, I jumped at it. Alice became a rather passionate devotee of cabaret and burlesque, and she had her very own version in the Diamond Theater’s Variety and Burlesque Spectacular. Once a month, she puts on a show so magnificent it brings patrons from all over Wyoming. In fact, they’ve even heard of her Spectacular as far away as New York…What? I can totally make my characters insanely successful. It was the Right Thing To Do 😉

Alice also has the desire to try her hand in Paris and when she meets Rupert, our intrepid hero, he encourages her to pursue her dreams. She starts to think that maybe she could put on a fabulous show in the heart of Montmartre, Paris’s cabaret district, but when she discovers his deception, it cuts her deep and she can’t help but think he’s used her deep-held wish for his own gain…

*sigh* Poor Alice.

And now, a contest#! Comment below, leave your email address, and you’ll go in the running to win!

Cassandra grew up daydreaming, inventing fantastical worlds and marvelous adventures. Once she learned to read (First phrase – To the Beach. True story), she was never without a book, reading of other people’s fantastical worlds and marvelous adventures.

Fairy tales, Famous Fives, fantasies and fancies; horror stories, gumshoe detectives, science fiction; Cassandra read it all. Then she discovered Romance and a true passion was born.

So, once upon a time, after making a slight detour into the world of finance, Cassandra tried her hand at writing. After a brief foray into horror, she couldn’t discount her true passion. She started to write Romance and fell deep.

The love affair exists to this very day.

Cassandra lives in Adelaide, South Australia.

Owner of the Diamond Saloon and Theater, Alice Reynolds is astounded when a fancy Englishman offers to buy her saloon. She won’t be selling her saloon to  anyone, let alone a man with a pretty, empty-headed grin…but then, she reckons that grin just might be a lie, and a man of intelligence and cunning resides beneath.

Rupert Llewellyn has another purpose for offering to buy the pretty widow’s saloon—the coal buried deep in land she owns. However, he never banked on her knowing eyes making him weak at the knees, or how his deception would burn upon his soul.

Each determined to outwit the other, they tantalize and tease until passion explodes. But can their desire bridge the lies told and trust broken?

I’ve never seen a Burlesque or Cabaret show, but I wouldn’t mind. It’s funny how years ago those were thought to be so risque, but nowadays they’re super tame compared to what we’re bombarded with on TV, strip clubs, etc.

I’m the same as Faith. Never been, but would love to go. I believe there was a brief unit on them in one of my classes in university, but going to see a show was not part of the curriculum.

    All the best!
