CML Main Branch Renovation Preview

The newly renovated Main Branch of The Columbus Metropolitan Library opens tomorrow and on Monday, we were invited in for a sneak peek! For those of you that weren’t following me on Twitter during the tour, I fell absolutely in love with this place!   Let me just be the first to say it:

If you’re a creative person, Main Branch is going to be your place!

Picnic tables from inside!

I don’t know about you, but I always feel more creative when I’m out in the sun.  The Main Branch thought of this and now the library opens out into the topiary park and there are tables with umbrellas.  WiFi does reach out there, so if you’re the direct sunlight sort of creative and need a pretty scene to thrive, we’ll probably find you there.

If you’re the type of creative that just wants to order your research, check your email really quick while you’re waiting and pick up your reserves, they have you covered too!  IPads and 5 minute timed computers will be there for you in the main atrium so you can do what you need to do and run on to your next adventure!

The new children’s area will appeal big time to young creatives!  I WISH I would have had this spot when I was a kid.  A smaller door to go through and shelves that are at their level in a colorful and open site lit by mostly natural light.  Bright colorful chairs, school bus shaped reading areas and a beautiful event circle right in the middle of the room.  The icing on the cake for me was the fish tank where a fish was playing peek-a-boo with me!

What’s going on little guy?

20160620_112104If you go upstairs, you’ll find they kept the old stairs with the mural, which I was REALLY happy about.  Up on the second floor you’ll find my favorite section:  Fiction!  They have new display walls with a touch screen TV that will show you a map, current interesting reads and where events are going on.  Most of the event rooms are on this level and they vary in size.  Also on this level is the teen section.  I wish I would have had this when I was a teen too!  CML has really listened to the growing demand of the youth in Columbus and have offered a really cool space to hang out with ergonomic chairs to chill and read in or a funky couch next to the nearby..wait for it.. XBOX!   Yes you can play XBox games at the library!  I love this and I thought of my neighbors kids immediately.    They also have clear windows into the conference rooms so that teens can see successful adults doing their thing and hopefully gain inspiration from it!  This is so cool.  Like I said, I WISH I had this when I was a teen.

Third floor is Genealogy and non-fiction and they have the built in the wall bookshelf displaying the latest interesting reads right next to the touch TV just like on the second level.  This is the more studious level for it has mostly research books, non-fiction and Genealogy stuff.  All the microfilm stuff has gone electronic and as per the rest of the building, there are places to sit, research and get a beautiful view.  Even up here, there were places I just wanted to sit and write or read.  It was so peaceful and energizing!

I hope you’re as excited as I am about this!  I can just see my writer friends hanging out here and putting in a few thousand words while sipping on coffee or nibbling on a sandwich.  I could see my musician friends working something out with the events team to possibly do acoustic shows.  Maybe my artist friends will end up having a few pieces in the gallery.  Ooh or better yet!  Maybe my author friends could have book signings there or small writing seminars in one of the meeting rooms!  I can guarantee you one thing, you’ll see me there a lot blogging or editing concert photos!  So come say hi!  I’ll be there Saturday for the opening and if they let me every day afterward!
